What is a Speech-Language Pathologist (SLP)?
The Alberta College of Speech-Language Pathologists and Audiologists states that Speech-Language Pathologists (SLPs) are healthcare professionals with clinical training and an educational background in speech production, language understanding and expression, stuttering, voice health, and swallowing.
How do I know if I need an SLP?
I have frequently found that, by the time a parent or caregiver is starting to have concerns and ask questions about their child's speech and language development, it's time to contact a Speech-Language Pathologist.
Perhaps you've noticed that your child isn't using as many words as their friends or siblings at that age.
Maybe you've noticed that your child is having trouble saying certain sounds or is very difficult to understand.
Or, they seem to have difficulty following directions and forming meaningful, correct sentences.
Sometimes, parents realize that their child's communication skills have stopped developing or they're losing skills they once had.
These can all be indicators that the support of a Speech-Language Pathologist may be beneficial. I'm here to help you sort out what's going on and make a plan!
